What is Medicare? A brief summary
The federal health insurance program for Americans age 65 and older (as well as younger people with certain conditions) has 4 parts: A, B, C, and D.
Part A covers inpatient hospital care, a specific and limited range of skilled nursing and home health care, and hospice services.
Part B covers many physician visits, supplies, well-checks, and some outpatient services.
Part C consists of a selection of optional Medicare Advantage Plans through which a private company delivers Parts A and B to you, usually along with its own prescription coverage.
Part D is an add-on prescription medication coverage program.

Finding Dallas Medicare providers
You can find Dallas-area doctors with Medicare’s online Physician Compare tool. A search for fee-for-service providers within 15 miles of downtown Dallas shows more than 30 geriatric medicine doctors nearby, 3 geriatric psychiatrists, and more than 400 family practitioners. If you expand your search to include doctors who accept Medicare patients but don’t charge the fee-for-service rate, then you will have more options to choose from—as long as you don’t mind paying the difference in cost.
Click on doctors’ names to see their office location and contact details, what type of Medicare payments they take, where they have hospital privileges and any fellow practitioners in the same group. Right now, comparison tools are only available for group practices, but Medicare says it will allow users to compare doctors later on.
Medicare’s website lets you search for and compare more than 90 Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing homes in the Dallas area. You can see ratings for each facility for health inspection history, staffing, resident care quality, and overall performance. There are similar tools for finding Dallas home health care services, hospitals, dialysis centers, and medical equipment and supplies.
