Senior Discounts in Denver
Retirees who want to explore the Mile High City can bring down the cost of a day out by using senior discounts at major attractions around town. Because Denver’s cost of living is a bit more than 6% above the national average, according to Forbes, seeking out senior deals is a smart habit to get into. Don’t be afraid to ask. Some businesses offer on-request discounts to customers as young as 55.
Lower rates on the great Colorado outdoors
Denver has a vast network of city and mountain parks that are free to enjoy, but the city is home to some other awesome outdoor spaces that require admission and cut seniors a deal. The Denver Botanic Gardens main location on York Street gives visitors age 65 and up 25% off admission. The gardens blend hundreds of species of native Colorado and western US plants with changing fine art and botanical exhibits, such as the indoor Orchid Showcase scheduled for January 8 through February 23. Spend a day checking out more than 3 dozen individual gardens like the fragrant and touch-friendly Sensory Garden and the elegant glass-walled Orangery.
Not to be outdone by the local flora, the fauna at the Denver Zoo include enormous grizzly bears, the water-loving Amur leopard, and Asian elephants in a 10-acre habitat that’s among the largest on the continent. Seniors age 65 and up get $2 off general zoo admission.
The fine art of savings
Art lovers of a certain age (65 and up) enjoy discount privileges at the popular Denver Art Museum and the unique Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art. The DAM offers senior deals for general admission and tickets to special events like the current exclusive Cartier exhibit (open through March 15) that features 75 years’ worth of elaborate watches, jewelry, and art objects. The museum’s permanent holdings include a comprehensive pre-Columbian collection drawn from nearly every ancient culture from Mexico to Argentina.
At the Kirkland Museum, furniture, glassware, and other décor pieces are displayed “salon style.” Individual galleries are arranged like rooms in a very well-appointed house that includes pieces from the Arts and Crafts movement through post-modern design.
Savings on Denver stadium tours
Coors Field and Sports Authority Field at Mile High offer behind the scenes tours for baseball and football fans, and both venues offer seniors discounts. At Coors Field, visitors age 55 and up get 20% off a tour that lasts a bit more than an hour and takes sightseers through the dugout, concourse, and press, club, and suite levels along with clubhouse stops on certain days. At Mile High, visitors get to see the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Museum, the visiting team locker room, press areas, and the entrance tunnel the Broncos use to take the field.
Bringing down the cost of getting around
RTD, Denver’s public transportation system, offers discounted bus and rail fares to riders age 65 and older. To get the deal, show a valid photo ID or Medicare card, or pick up a $2 Special Discount Card from RTD’s offices if you’re going to ride often.
