Catholic Health Care in San Francisco
Seniors looking for Catholic assisted living in San Francisco won’t be disappointed. The city, named for St. Francis of Assisi by Spanish settlers, has an award-winning Catholic medical center, adult day care and Alzheimer’s day care services, and an assisted living and skilled nursing center that’s been part of the community for more than a century. Whether you need a little help with daily life or regular medical care, San Francisco’s Catholic tradition of service gives you lots of choices.
Home health and independent living services in San Francisco
The Adult Day Services/Alzheimer’s Day Resource Center, run by Catholic Charities of San Francisco, gives caregivers a respite while providing safe, interesting activities for seniors with dementia and those who would otherwise be spending their days alone. Typical activities include gentle exercise, current events discussions, hot lunches, games, and weekly pet therapy visits. The center, in the Oceanview neighborhood, can help families coordinate transportation via San Francisco Paratransit Services.
Another Catholic Charities facility, the OMI Senior Center in Merced Heights, offers day care for a mixed group of seniors and other adults with disabilities. Activities include crafts, arts, day trips, and fitness along with daily hot lunches. Personalized case management services are provided on-site.
Other free and discounted senior programming is available through St. Mary’s Medical Center. In addition to leading-edge health care (see below), St. Mary’s runs free weekly gentle yoga classes, blood pressure screenings, feature film screenings, and diabetic education sessions. The hospital also sponsors a weekly mall-walking group at the Stonestown Galleria for fitness and social time. Seniors can also drop by the St. Mary’s Cafeteria on weekdays for discounted breakfasts and lunches.
Bay Area Catholic senior housing
Residents of the Edith Witt Senior Community in the South of Market area get affordable rent, on-site primary health care, and comprehensive case management services provided by Catholic Charities. Edith Witt is one of about 20 affordable Bay Area senior housing communities run by Mercy Housing, a national group founded by Omaha’s Sisters of Mercy.
St. Anne’s Home is an assisted living and long-term skilled nursing community run by San Francisco’s Little Sisters of the Poor. Onsite therapy services, a beauty salon, daily religious services, and a prime location next to the Presidio make St. Anne’s an appealing option for ambulatory seniors who can no longer live at home.
