Senior Discounts in Portland

Portland offers a bumper crop of discounts for seniors, and plenty of free options, too. The Rose City is home to a number of free public parks, natural areas, and gardens — so many that you can spend days or weeks enjoying the outdoors without spending a dime. But for those times when currency is required, there are plenty of ways to spend less of it around town.

1. TriMet Portland Transit offers serious discounts on bus, rail, and streetcar fares to “honored citizens” age 65 and up. Seniors save more than half the cost of single tickets and day passes and they get 75% off 7-day, 14-day, and 30-day passes.
2. The Green Zebra Grocery earns its senior-friendly stripes by offering 10% off to shoppers age 62 and up on Tuesdays. The current store in northwest Portland will be joined by a new southeast location in 2015.
3. Portland’s public golf courses offer reduced rates to players age 65 and up who drop by the Rose City Golf Course to buy a $10 ID card. Cardholders can get discounted rates at selected times of day all week long. Got a grandchild you want to spend some time with? Portland also offers discounts for players under 17 with ID once they’ve attended a golf course orientation session.
4. The Portland Japanese Garden is one of the city’s most popular landmarks. It’s an oasis of carefully tended greenery and a symbol of Portland’s decades-long bond with its sister city of Sapporo, Japan. Explore five signature garden areas and the center’s exhibitions. Seniors 62 and older received discounted admission.
5. Portland is also home to the Lan Su Chinese Garden, considered one of the best examples of a 16th-century, Ming Dynasty-style garden outside of China, inspired by Portland’s sister city of Suzhou and built with the help of Suzhou craftspeople. The garden hosts a popular two-week Chinese New Year festival each year. Seniors age 62 and up get discounted daily admission.
6. The Pittock Mansion was built by Oregon Trail travelers Henry and Georgina Burton Pittock, whose life together in Portland spanned more than half a century. Their restored home is now a museum that offers guests a look at turn of the 20th-century life, local art, and 54 acres of landscaped and forested grounds that are now a public park. Senior discounts are offered to guests age 65 and up.
7. Explore the world at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Seniors age 63 and up get discounted general admission and Empirical Theater tickets. Shows at the museum’s Kendall Planetarium and tours of the USS Blueback fast-attack Navy submarine are extra.
8. Another popular local museum, the Portland Art Museum, dates from 1892 and has a large permanent collection of modern art, Native American works, Asian art, and English silver. The 4-story museum features more than 110,000 square feet of gallery space, so wear comfortable shoes and plan to linger. Guests age 55 and up get 20% off admission.
