Baptist Health Care in Detroit

Baptist Health Care in Detroit

Baptist churches and groups have a special place in Detroit’s history and community. From helping African-American newcomers during the 1920s’ Great Migration to providing senior services today, Baptist organizations are woven into Detroit’s social fabric. Here are some noteworthy Baptist senior care options in the Motor City:

Comprehensive senior living in the Detroit suburbs

The Baptist Manor in Farmington Hills north of Detroit has served low-income seniors since 1972. Independent living options include duplex and apartment units with Manor meal, transportation, and housekeeping services offered a la carte. Social and fitness activities for independent living residents include daily transportation to shops and appointments, monthly library visits, weekly games and exercise classes, and frequent visits by speakers.

The Haworth Assisted Living Center on campus provides round-the-clock supervision, all meals, housekeeping and laundry services, and the option of a private or shared suite. The Haworth Center also offers transitional care for Manor residents and other seniors who need extra help between leaving the hospital and returning home. Haworth residents can choose from a busy schedule of activities, such as card games, pet therapy visits, music time, cooking club, and light exercise.

The Baptist Manor is also home to an onsite medical practice, Total Health Care Professionals. Residents have the option of at-home or in-office doctor visits, and the practice offers a full range of therapy services, eye care, and social work.

All Baptist Manor residents have access to service coordinators who can help them find and apply for the benefits and community programs for which they are eligible. Weekly worship services are held in a number of faith traditions at the Gamma Chapel, including Catholic and Jewish services in addition to Baptist worship. Manor staffers work with residents of all faiths to help them observe their religion.

Baptist support and wellness services for seniors living at home

Historic Little Rock Baptist Church and the city of Detroit jointly run the Considine-Historic Little Rock Family Life, Education and Recreation Center adjacent to the church. Membership is free for seniors age 60 and up, regardless of residency status. The center features an indoor heated Olympic-size pool, gym, boxing facilities, bowling alley, and locker rooms.

Second Baptist Church of Detroit has a long tradition of social-justice work. Second Baptist was founded by freed slaves in 1836, was active in the fight for emancipation and voting rights, and is Michigan’s oldest African-American church. Today, Second Baptist’s health ministry offers church members and the wider community health assistance and first aid during worship services. The church also serves the Greektown area with regular health screenings and classes as well as quarterly Healthy Mind, Healthy Body, Healthy Spirit programs that include a free meal as part of each event.

Families and seniors looking for dementia support can take part in True Love Missionary Baptist Church Alzheimers support group meetings, held at the church in northwest Detroit on the third Thursday of each month.

Whether you need help with health issues, want a friendly place to work out, or are searching for an affordable home with the care you need, Detroit’s Baptist community has a lot to offer.
